About Poetto
The Poetto is Cagliari's beach: a strip of sand about 8 kilometers long in the Golfo degli Angeli, stretching from the Sella del Diavolo promontory to the area of Quartu Sant'Elena. Behind it lie the old salt pans and the Molentargius lagoons.
The name comes from the Catalan Pouet, meaning 'small well', already recorded in the 16th century. For centuries the area was used for salt extraction, and watchtowers were built along the coast against pirate attacks. City residents began to use the beach in the early 20th century, when the first bathing establishments appeared.
Today the Poetto has sections with chairs and umbrellas for rent and free areas, a promenade with a bike lane and kiosks that stay open late in summer. The western tip, next to the Sella del Diavolo, is called Marina Piccola.
The beach is used year-round by locals for walking and running; swimming in the sea typically runs from May to October.
