About Parco naturale regionale Molentargius-Saline
The Parco naturale regionale Molentargius-Saline, established in 1999, protects a system of lagoons and old salt pans adjacent to the city, between the neighborhoods of Cagliari, Quartu Sant'Elena and the Poetto beach. It is one of the most important wetlands in Europe, recognized under the Ramsar Convention.
The main attraction for visitors is the pink flamingos, which live and breed in the lagoons. Herons, mosquitoes and many other waterbirds can also be seen. Flamingos are usually visible year-round, in numbers that vary with the season.
The park has freshwater lagoons, such as Bellarosa Minore, and saltwater basins in the former salt pans, where salt was extracted from Roman times until the 20th century. Flat trails allow walking or cycling between the ponds.
Good views of the park can be had from the Monte Urpinu hill, the Sella del Diavolo and the Poetto promenade.
