About Bastione di Saint Remy
The Bastione di Saint Remy is one of the symbols of Cagliari. Built between 1899 and 1903 on top of former Spanish bastions, it links the Villanova district, at the Piazza Costituzione, to the top of the Castello. The name honors the baron of Saint Remy, the first viceroy of the House of Savoia in Sardinia.
Two stairways rise to a triumphal arch with Corinthian columns, made of light limestone. At the top is the Terrazzo Umberto I, a large open terrace about 56 metres above the sea, from which you can see the roofs of the Marina and Villanova, the port, the lagoons and the Poetto beach.
Under the terrace, the Passeggiata Coperta, a gallery carved into the old bastion, once served as a ballroom, a hospital in the First World War and a fair hall. Today it hosts art exhibitions.
The bastion was hit in the 1943 bombings that destroyed much of the city and was rebuilt after the war.
