About Area Archeologica di Nora
Nora is located on the Capo di Pula promontory on the southern coast, surrounded by the sea on three sides. It was founded by the Phoenicians alongside nuragic settlements and had one of the island's busiest commercial ports. The Nora Stele was found there, containing the oldest written record of the name of Sardinia.
After the Roman conquest in 238 BC, Nora became a municipium and reached its height in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. It was the starting point of the island's Roman roads. Excavations have revealed the theatre, the seaside baths, houses with mosaic floors, the forum and the temple dedicated to the goddess Tanit.
The city was gradually abandoned from the 5th century onward, with attacks by the Vandals and later by pirates. Part of the ruins is now under water along the coast.
The site is open every day, with guided tours throughout the day. Nearby are the small church of Sant'Efisio, the end point of the procession that departs from Cagliari on May 1, and the Torre del Coltellazzo, a Spanish watchtower.
