About Complesso nuragico di Palmavera
The Complesso nuragico di Palmavera lies between the Alghero inlet and the Gulf of Porto Conte, about 10 km from the town. The settlement began around the 15th century BC and was in use until the early Iron Age, when a fire destroyed it at the end of the 8th century BC.
The nuraghe has a main tower, the oldest, with a chamber covered by a false stone dome, and a second tower added later. An outer wall with small towers formed two courtyards around it.
The highlight is the meeting hut, circular, with a stone bench along the wall and, in the center, a sandstone model of a nuraghe. The original is in the museu de Sassari; the site contains a copy. Around it you can see the bases of about 50 huts, part of a village that once was much larger.
The first excavations date to 1905, and the village was revealed in the 1960s.
