About Capo Caccia

Capo Caccia is the large limestone promontory west of Alghero that, together with Punta Giglio, forms the mouth of Porto Conte bay. Seen from the town, it is the silhouette that appears on the horizon at sunset. The name comes from pigeon hunts that 19th-century nobles carried out by boat around the cliffs.

The cliffs plunge straight into the sea and shelter birds of prey, gulls and, nearby, the griffon vulture, protected by the Parco di Porto Conte. The surrounding marine area is protected by the Area Marina Protetta Capo Caccia - Isola Piana, with submerged caves known to divers.

At the top stands a lighthouse about 186 meters above the sea, one of the most visible in the Mediterranean. From the roadside viewpoints you can see the island Foradada, with its natural arch, and the whole Alghero coastline.

It is on the northwest side of the promontory that the Escala del Cabirol begins, descending to the Grotta di Nettuno.
