About Giardini di Villa Melzi d'Eril
Villa Melzi was built between 1808 and 1810 for Francesco Melzi d'Eril, vice-president of the Italian Republic during the Napoleonic period, designed by the architect Giocondo Albertolli. The villa remains a private residence; what is open to visitors are the gardens, the chapel and a small museum.
The gardens run along the lakeshore for several hundred meters, in an English style, with lawns, centuries-old trees, azaleas and rhododendrons, which bloom in April and May, and camellias. A pond with Japanese maples and a bridge forms one of the most photographed corners.
Along the way there are sculptures, including ancient Egyptian pieces, and a small pavilion facing the water. The family chapel houses neoclassical funerary monuments, and the museum gathers objects and memories from the Napoleonic era.
The gardens are open seasonally, typically from the end of March to the beginning of November. Tickets are sold at the entrance, without reservation.
