About Duomo di Ravello
The Duomo di Ravello, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and to San Pantaleone, began to be built in 1086, when Ravello received a bishop. It was a cathedral until 1818, when the diocese was suppressed, and today it is a minor basilica and a national monument.
The bronze doors, from 1179, are the work of Barisano da Trani and have panels with scenes of the Passion and figures of saints. Inside, the highlight is the two ambones, medieval pulpits: the Gospel pulpit, from 1272, with columns supported on lions and mosaic decoration, and the Epistle pulpit, older, with mosaics of Jonah and the whale.
The chapel of San Pantaleone, patron of Ravello, houses an ampoule with the saint's blood, which according to tradition liquefies on the patron saint's feast day, July 27. The bell tower, from the 12th and 13th centuries, has Moorish features.
In the crypt is the Museu do Duomo, with sculptures, marble pieces and liturgical objects. The church stands in the same square as Villa Rufolo, facing the valley.
