About Museo della Carta
The Museo della Carta occupies an old paper mill in the Valle dei Mulini, the Vale dos Moinhos, in the upper part of Amalfi. The town has made paper since the Middle Ages, and the carta di Amalfi, also called carta bambagina, made from rags of cotton and linen, is one of the oldest in Europe.
The museum was opened in 1969 by Nicola Milano, from one of the town's paper-making families. The original machines, restored and operational, show how the force of the Canneto stream's water drove the hammers that turned rags into pulp.
The guided tour is short and ends with a demonstration of making a sheet by hand. Upstairs there are photos, prints and a library about the history of paper. In the shop you'll find notebooks, stationery and invitations made with the local paper.
From the museum, the street continues uphill through the valley, among the ruins of other paper mills and old mills — a quiet stretch of walking away from the bustle of the square.
