About Atrani
Atrani is attached to Amalfi, on the other side of the promontory where the Torre dello Ziro stands. It is one of the smallest communes in Italy by area, tucked into the end of the Dragone stream valley, with stacked houses, arches and stairways leading to a small center around the piazza.
The Piazza Umberto I is the heart of the village: a small square, with bars and restaurants, opening onto the beach through a passage under the road. Above it sits the church of San Salvatore de' Birecto, where the dukes of Amalfi were crowned.
At the seaward end you can see the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, with a baroque façade and a ceramic dome, perched on the rock. Atrani's beach has dark sand and pebbles, smaller and calmer than Amalfi's.
Many people pass by Atrani only from the road, but the village is worth the short walk. At night, the piazza is usually lively with locals and visitors who come from Amalfi to dine.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
1 to 2 hours to walk the lanes and sit in the square; half a day if you include the beach.
Best time
In the late afternoon and evening, for dining in the square. In the morning the beach is usually quieter. In summer, the festival of Santa Maria Maddalena in July fills the village.
How to get there
On foot from Amalfi, in about 10 minutes, via the road pavement or the pedestrian passage under the mountain that starts near the Piazza Duomo. SITA buses toward Salerno stop on the road above the village.
Tip
Follow the signs for the pedestrian gallery to avoid the narrow road pavement. You can combine Atrani with the climb to Ravello: the staircase that starts from Atrani is steep, so it's only for those who enjoy walking; the bus is the easier option.
