About Marina di Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the easternmost village of the Cinque Terre. The name comes from Rivus Major, the stream that runs under the main street, the via Colombo, and flows down to the sea. At the end of that street is the marina, a small port where the fishermen's boats are hauled up the ramp.
The Genoese tower-houses rise in parallel rows up the two slopes of the valley, painted in different colors. The old center dates back to the 13th century; the station quarter, in the neighboring valley, appeared after the construction of the ferrovia Gênova–Pisa in the 19th century.
From the marina a path along the rocks leads to a small pebble beach east of the village. In season, that is where the boats that link Riomaggiore with the other villages and with Portovenere call.
The village’s cuisine is more land-based than sea-based: the savory rice tart is the dish of the patron saint’s festival, São João Batista, and a countryside herb soup appears in winter.
