About Castello di Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore's castle sits on the hill that separates the village's two valleys, the Rio Maggiore and the Rio Finale. A first fortification was erected in 1260 by the Turcotti marquises, and the present castle was completed by the Republic of Genoa between the 15th and 16th centuries.
The building is square, with two low round towers. In Napoleonic times the interior was filled in and turned into a cemetery. At the end of the 20th century the complex was restored and became a cultural centre used by the town hall for exhibitions and gatherings.
From the terrace you can see the old town descending the valley to the sea and the coast towards Portovenere. Nearby are the oratory of San Rocco and, a little above, the church of San Giovanni Battista, dating from 1340.
There is an entrance fee to the interior; check opening hours before going, as they change with the season.
