About Sentiero 506 Manarola–Volastra
Park trail 506 leaves Manarola and climbs the vineyard-covered slopes up to Volastra, a small village with a circular layout whose name comes from Latin and means 'place of the olive trees'. It is the best way to see up close the terraces held by dry-stone walls that form the Cinque Terre landscape.
The route has many steps and a steady climb; the park classifies it as a hiking trail. In Volastra is the sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute, a 12th-century Romanesque church. From there, those with stamina can follow trail 586 toward Corniglia, through vineyards and olive groves, depending on the condition of the sections.
It is from these grapes that the white Cinque Terre wine and Sciacchetrà — a dessert wine made from dried grapes — are produced. Harvest usually takes place in September, with the vineyards in activity.
On the hill facing Manarola, since 1961 a large illuminated nativity scene has been set up during the Christmas period, created by retired railway worker Mario Andreoli. The season typically runs from early December until the end of January, with the lights on at night; check the dates before going.
