About Scheveningen

Scheveningen was a fishing village and became The Hague’s seaside resort. Today it is a neighborhood of the city, with a wide sandy beach on the North Sea, dunes and a promenade (boulevard) full of restaurants and beach bars.

The best-known spot is De Pier, a covered pier that juts out into the sea. At its end there is a tower with a viewing platform 45 metres high and the SkyView Ferris wheel. In front of the pier stands the Kurhaus, the large 19th-century hotel that became the symbol of the resort.

The sea is cold even in summer, and the wind is constant. In the warm months, from June to August, the beach bars set up structures on the sand; during the rest of the year many close.

Further south is the harbour, with fishing boats and fish restaurants. The Dutch eat raw herring (haring), served with onion, at stalls scattered around the town.

How much time to set aside

From half a day to a full day, depending on the weather and how long you want to stay at the beach.

Best time

From June to August, on warm days the beach fills up. In the late afternoon the sun sets over the sea, since the coast faces west; on clear days the view is usually beautiful. Outside summer, dress warmly because of the wind.

How to get there

By tram from Den Haag Centraal or from the centre, in about 20 minutes. Line 1, which also goes via Delft, terminates in Scheveningen.

Tip

Bring a windbreaker even in summer. Watch your belongings on crowded beach days. To see the beach as it was in the 19th century, visit Panorama Mesdag in the centre first.
