About Mauritshuis

The Mauritshuis is a small museum with a top‑quality collection of 17th‑century Dutch and Flemish painting, the so‑called Golden Age. It has operated as a museum since 1822, in a palace built between 1633 and 1644 beside the Binnenhof, with its façade facing the Hofvijver lake.

The most sought‑after piece is Girl with a Pearl Earring, by Johannes Vermeer. The same collection includes View of Delft, also by Vermeer; The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, by Rembrandt; The Bull, by Paulus Potter; and The Goldfinch, by Carel Fabritius. The rooms are small and get crowded at peak times.

The same combined ticket includes the Galerij Prins Willem V, on the other side of the Binnenhof, in the Buitenhof. It is an 18th‑century gallery with paintings hung side by side up to the ceiling, as was done at the time, and is considered the first museum open to the public in the Netherlands.

How to get there

It is on the Plein in the historic centre, about a 10‑minute walk from Den Haag Centraal. Coming from Delft, the tram that links the two cities stops close to the centre.

Tip

The museum does not accept cash: bring a card. After your visit, go out to the shore of the Hofvijver and view the building from outside, with the Binnenhof beside it. View of Delft is more interesting if you include Delft on the same itinerary.
