About Madurodam
Madurodam is a miniature Netherlands. Opened in 1952, it reproduces hundreds of buildings and landscapes of the country at a 1:25 scale: the canals of Amsterdã with their bicycles, the cube houses of Roterdã, the harbour with container ships, windmills, dikes and Schiphol airport.
The name honours George Maduro, a student from Curaçao who fought as a cavalry officer in the defence of Haia in May 1940, joined the resistance and died in the Dachau concentration camp in 1945. His parents donated the initial funds for the park, which the family views as a memorial to their son.
Many models move, and there are interactive attractions: visitors close the sea barrier of the Oosterschelde or load ships in the port. Some attractions are covered, which helps on rainy days.
For those with limited time in the Netherlands, it is a quick way to see the whole country in one place. Children usually enjoy it more than adults.
