About Kunstmuseum Den Haag
The Kunstmuseum Den Haag, known until 2019 as the Gemeentemuseum, occupies a brick building designed by architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage and opened in 1935. The galleries receive natural light and this is part of the visit.
The highlight is Piet Mondrian, with about 300 works, from landscapes of his early career to the compositions of black lines and primary colours. His final work, Victory Boogie Woogie, unfinished and painted in New York between 1942 and 1944, is here.
The collection also includes painters of the School of Haia, a 19th-century movement linked to the city, as well as Monet, Picasso, Theo van Doesburg and Charley Toorop. There is also fashion, porcelain, musical instruments and period rooms.
The museum is away from the historic centre, near the Palácio da Paz and on the way to Scheveningen. Next door are the Fotomuseum Den Haag and the contemporary art centre KM21.
