About Escher in Het Paleis
Escher in Het Paleis brings together prints by Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972), the Dutch artist known for impossible buildings, staircases that go up and down at the same time, and drawings where fish turn into birds.
There are always more than 120 works on display, including his best-known pieces and a rotating selection. The route covers the Italian landscapes from early in his career, the regular divisions of the plane, and the Metamorphoses series.
The building is part of the visit. It is the former winter palace of the queen mother Emma on the Lange Voorhout, a tree-lined avenue in the centre of Haia. fireplaces and period rooms sit alongside Escher’s work.
Escher was inspired by the mosaics of the Alhambra in Granada, which he visited twice. Audioguides are available via the Bloomberg Connects app.
