About Volendams Museum

The Volendams Museum shows what life in Volendam was like between 1850 and 1950. The permanent exhibition deals with the village's traditional clothing and historic interiors: in a street set up inside the museum there are four spaces, two living rooms, a shop and a tavern, decorated in styles used between 1815 and 1920.

Volendam's traditional costume became known worldwide: women wore a tall white lace cap with side points, and men wore wide dark trousers. The museum explains the variations of the costumes according to occasion and age, rather than reducing them to a costume.

As Volendam is a fishing village, fishing has its own section, with boat models and a reconstruction of a ship's forecastle accommodation. There are also paintings and sculptures by artists who passed through the village.

A separate room is entirely covered by more than 11 million cigar bands, glued between 1947 and 1996 into mosaics featuring the coats of arms of the Dutch provinces and well-known buildings. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions.
