About Teylers Museum
Teylers Museum was created from the legacy of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, a cloth merchant and banker from Haarlem who died in 1778. Following Enlightenment ideas, the foundation he left opened a centre of art and science for citizens in 1784. It is the oldest museum in the country.
The heart of the museum is the Oval Room, built behind Teyler's house and opened to the public in 1784. The interior is virtually unchanged, with wooden cabinets, scientific instruments and minerals. It is the oldest museum room in the Netherlands with its original interior preserved.
In the 19th century the museum gained the wing facing the river Spaarne, with fossil rooms, a coin cabinet and a painting gallery. The drawing collection includes sheets by Italian and Dutch masters, shown in temporary exhibitions because they are light-sensitive.
Pieter Teyler's house next door is also part of the visit. The museum usually opens Tuesday to Sunday; check the opening times.
