Mykonos is a small, dry island of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, about 85 km² with just over 10,000 inhabitants. Almost everyone lives in the Chora, the main town, a maze of white alleys with colorful doors and windows, churches with red or blue domes and bougainvillea. The confusing layout was created on purpose to confuse pirates and block the wind.

The island’s image is in the Chora: the Kato Mili windmills on a hill above the sea, the houses of Little Venice with wooden balconies over the water and the church of Panagia Paraportiani, a group of five adjoining chapels in the Kastro neighborhood. Mykonos is also a nightlife destination and has organized beaches concentrated on the south coast, where the north wind blows less.

In front of the Chora lies Delos, an uninhabited island that was one of the great sanctuaries of Antiquity, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis according to myth. It is a World Heritage Site and can be visited in half a day by boat from the old port. It provides a historical counterpoint to an island that lives off the summer.

The meltemi wind, from July to August, is strong and constant; the alleys of the Chora and the southern beaches are the refuge.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to October the island is fully operational. July and August are the busiest, most expensive and windiest months, with the meltemi blowing in the afternoons. June and September usually offer good sea and warm weather with fewer people. From November to April most hotels, bars and restaurants close and boat services become scarce; check what will be open.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Two days cover the Chora, the windmills, Little Venice, Delos and one beach. Three days allow you to add Ano Mera, a second beach and the Armenistis lighthouse at sunset. Those who come just for the beach atmosphere usually stay longer.

Which city to stay in

The Chora is the most practical base for those who want to walk to restaurants, bars, the old port and the boats to Delos; the upper part of town and the neighborhood around the windmills have sea views. Ornos and Platis Gialos on the south coast suit those who prefer a beach on the doorstep, with buses and boats to the Chora. Agios Stefanos and Tourlos to the north are close to the new port and have simpler beaches. Ano Mera, inland, is the quiet option if you have a car.
