About Matadero Madrid
The complex was designed by the municipal architect Luis Bellido and built between 1911 and 1925 to serve as the slaughterhouse and livestock market of Madri. There are dozens of exposed-brick pavilions with neo‑Mudejar details, such as tiles with geometric designs. The slaughterhouse operated until 1996.
The city council converted the pavilions into a contemporary creation center, opened in 2006. Each nave has a use: there are theater and dance rooms, the Casa del Lector dedicated to reading, the Central de Diseño and spaces for exhibitions and workshops.
The Plaza and Calle Matadero, between the pavilions, host shows, festivals and outdoor interventions. The center is next to Madrid Río, the linear park along the Manzanares, and the Matadero bridge connects the two sides of the river.
