About Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil de las Bodegas lies in the Sierra de Cádiz, about 19 km from Ronda by road, with around 2,600 inhabitants. The village occupies the gorge carved by the Guadalporcún river, and the houses descend from the castle down to the river on several levels. It was declared a historic‑artistic ensemble in 1985.
What stands out are the rock‑sheltered houses. Instead of carving into the rock, inhabitants closed the natural gap in the cliff with facades and built along it. On several streets the rock forms the ceiling of the pavement and of the houses.
Above is the 13th‑century Nazarid fortress, with the keep tower and stretches of wall. Tradition says the name comes from the Latin Septem nihil, seven times nothing, referring to the seven Castilian sieges. The last ended with the capture by the Catholic Monarchs on 21 September 1484, months before the fall of Ronda.
Beside the castle stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, from the 15th to 17th centuries, which combines a Mudéjar part and a Gothic one. The old town hall, which was once an access tower to the fortress, today houses the tourist office.
