About Alameda del Tajo
The Alameda del Tajo, formerly called Alameda de San Carlos, was opened in the early 19th century next to the bullring and on the edge of the Tajo's ledge. It consists of five parallel tree-lined avenues that end in a promenade with balconies projecting over the cliff, with views over the plain and the Serranía de Ronda.
Some trees are over 200 years old and are listed in the catalogue of notable trees of the province of Málaga, such as a Himalayan cedar, a large stone pine and a three-thorn acacia, near the duck pond. There are statues, like that of the bullfighter Pedro Romero, and the Teatro Vicente Espinel.
On the north side the promenade continues along the cliff edge under the name Paseo de los Ingleses, opened around the time the railway arrived, at the end of the 19th century. Below the viewpoints appears the rock formation known as Asa de la Caldera.
On the south side the Alameda links to the Paseo de Blas Infante and to the terraces by the old town-hall building, now a Parador, until it reaches the Puente Nuevo. It is a flat, shaded route between the bullring and the bridge, all facing the valley.
