About Avenida del Mar
Avenida del Mar links Marbella's Casco Antiguo to the beach in a short, flat, pedestrian-only stretch. The area used to be part of the large Parque de la Alameda, which in the past occupied almost a quarter of the urban area. It was a promenade for the local elite, who paraded there by carriage during festivities.
In the 1980s construction began on the underground car park beneath the avenue. In the 1990s it acquired its current design, with flowerbeds, ceramic benches, fountains and a marble pavement.
The highlight is the permanent exhibition of ten bronze sculptures by Salvador Dalí along the central axis. The works revisit themes of the Catalan artist, such as female figures, long-legged elephants and mythological characters. They are outdoors and can be seen up close at any time.
On the city side, the avenue borders the Parque de la Alameda, an 18th-century garden with ficus, pines and a fountain that is still the original. On the seafront side, it ends at the Paseo Marítimo, between the beaches of La Venus and El Faro.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
20 to 40 minutes to walk the avenue and see the sculptures, including the Parque de la Alameda beside it.
Best time
At the start of the morning or late afternoon, when the light is lower and the heat less. At night the avenue is lit and usually has activity from locals and tourists. From June to August the midday sun hits the light pavement strongly.
How to get there
It lies between the old town and the sea: from Plaza de los Naranjos it's about a 5-minute walk, crossing Avenida Ramón y Cajal. From the Estación de Autobuses, around 1.5 km, or by municipal bus to the Alameda stop.
Tip
Combine the avenue with the Parque de la Alameda and continue straight to the beach. The sculptures are not fenced, but do not climb on them. For photos without people, go early.
