About Plaza de Armas de Casablanca
Casablanca was founded on October 23, 1753 by Governor Domingo Ortiz de Rozas with the name Santa Bárbara de la Reina de Casablanca, in honor of Bárbara de Braganza, wife of King Ferdinand VI of Spain. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of that grid layout, typical of colonial towns.
Next to the plaza is the Parroquia Santa Bárbara de Casablanca, the town’s church, which bears the name of the patron saint. Nearby are the cultural center and a municipal archaeological and anthropological museum, as well as cafés and homestyle restaurants.
On the first weekend of April the plaza hosts the Vendimia de Casablanca, a harvest festival with stalls from the valley’s wineries, local food, crafts, music and activities like grape stomping. The rest of the year it’s a quiet small-town square, good for a stop between one winery and another.
