About Palacio Baburizza
Palacio Baburizza sits atop Cerro Alegre at the exit of Ascensor El Peral. The house was commissioned by Ottorino Zanelli and designed by the Italian architects Arnaldo Barison and Renato Schiavon, trained in Trieste and Vienna. The 1916 building mixes Art Nouveau with details that recall Central European architecture.
The second owner, Croatian businessman Pascual Baburizza, bequeathed the city his collection of European paintings and donated the front lot, which became Paseo Yugoslavo. Since 1971 the palace has housed the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes de Valparaíso, and in 1976 it was declared a historic monument.
The collection brings together Chilean painters such as Juan Francisco González and Pedro Lira, as well as works by Thomas Somerscales, known for his naval scenes, and the traveler Johann Moritz Rugendas. The rooms retain fireplaces, stained glass and worked wood from the original residence.
From the terrace and Paseo Yugoslavo the view covers Plaza Sotomayor, the roofs of the Puerto neighborhood and the anchored ships. Many people go up just for the viewpoint and end up visiting the museum.
