About Museo Gabriela Mistral

The Museo Gabriela Mistral is on avenida Gabriela Mistral, about 600 meters from Vicuña's Plaza de Armas, on the grounds of the orchard of the house where the poet was born. Gabriela Mistral, born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga in 1889, was a teacher, diplomat and, in 1945, the first Latin American writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The museum opened in 1957 and belongs to the National Cultural Heritage Service. The rooms follow her life as a creator, educator and diplomat in several countries, with documents, letters, photographs, books and original personal items.

At the entrance is a reproduction of the adobe house where she was born, assembled in 1984 with furniture and objects from the period. The simple house, with few rooms, helps to understand the poet's rural origins.

Those who want to follow Gabriela Mistral's steps can continue up the valley to Montegrande, where she spent her childhood and where her tomb is located.
