About Cruz del Tercer Milenio
The Cruz del Tercer Milenio is located atop Cerro El Vigía in Coquimbo, the port city neighboring La Serena. Construction began in 1999 for the Catholic Church's Jubilee year 2000 and it exceeds 80 meters in height, visible from much of the bay. The Municipalidad de Coquimbo administers the site.
The structure has several levels. At the base are the main chapel, with gifts sent by Pope John Paul II, a museum and a photo exhibition about the project. Above is a prayer plaza with ten columns representing the Ten Commandments and a bronze replica of Michelangelo's Pietà.
The main viewpoint is about 60 meters above the ground, with views of the port of Coquimbo, the Avenida del Mar and La Serena in the background. On clear days the entire coastline is visible.
The cross is also a pilgrimage center, and interior visits are paid. Check days and opening hours before you go.

Tip
Pair the cross with the Barrio Inglés and the port of Coquimbo, about one kilometer away. Those who are afraid of heights can stay in the prayer plaza and still have a good view.
