About Catedral de La Serena
La Catedral de La Serena stands on the east side of the Plaza de Armas, on the site of the old main church that was demolished in 1840. The current building began in 1844, designed by the French architect Juan Herbage in a neoclassical style. The upper part of the tower was redesigned in 1912 by the Frenchman Eugenio Joannon.
The walls are made of carved limestone set with lime mortar, a typical material of the city's old churches. Inside, the black-and-white marble floor, the stained glass brought from France and the pipe organ installed in the apse draw attention. The three painted vaults remain with unfinished scenes.
The Cathedral houses the tomb of Francisco de Aguirre, the conquistador who refounded the city in 1549, and contains a crypt of the bishops and archbishops of La Serena. It was declared a National Monument in 1981.
Next door is the Museo de Arte Religioso, with sacred objects from the archdiocese. Since it is an active church, visits should respect masses and ceremonies.
