About Barrio Inglés de Coquimbo
The Barrio Inglés is the old core of Coquimbo, next to the port and facing the bay. From the 19th century, the presence of British merchants in the port left English-style wooden houses with balconies and colorful facades, which still make up the neighborhood.
The center of the neighborhood is Plaza Vicuña Mackenna. Around it and on nearby streets are the Casa de la Cultura, the Casa de las Artes and the Centro Cultural Palace, alongside cafés, studios and craft shops. The area lies within the historic conservation zone of downtown Coquimbo.
A few blocks away are the port waterfront and the port terminal. Above them, about one kilometer up, Cerro El Vigía is topped by the Cruz del Tercer Milenio.
At night, the old houses host pubs and nightclubs, and the neighborhood concentrates Coquimbo's nightlife, especially from Thursday to Saturday.
