About Géiseres del Tatio
El Tatio is a geothermal field high in the Andes, at about 4,300 metres altitude, north of San Pedro de Atacama. A survey counted around 100 thermal springs there, of which about 80 are active geysers. The water emerges at about 86 °C, which is the boiling point at that altitude.
The steam columns are most visible in the early morning hours, when the air is freezing and the contrast with the hot water is greatest. That's why tours leave San Pedro at dawn and reach the field before sunrise, with temperatures that are usually well below zero.
The area is managed by the Atacameña communities of Toconce and Caspana, who have built marked trails, parking areas and signage. There is a natural thermal pool with changing rooms for those who wish to enter the warm water.
On the return, many tours stop in the village of Machuca, with stone houses and a small chapel, and in the floodplains along the route, where vicuñas and birds often appear.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
About an hour and a half to two hours in the field; with travel, the tour takes up the whole morning.
Best time
Early morning is the most sought-after period, because the steam shows up better in the cold. With the sun high, the columns diminish. Geyser activity varies from day to day. In winter the pre-dawn cold is even more intense, and summer rains can close the road in January and February.
How to get there
They are about 90 km north of San Pedro via road B-245, about a two-hour journey over dirt sections and bends. Most people go with an agency that departs at dawn. Drivers need a high-clearance vehicle or 4×4 and experience on mountain roads.
Tip
Wear several layers, a hat, gloves and thick socks: the cold on arrival is intense. Always stay behind the markings, because the ground near the fumaroles is thin and the water boils. Do this trip only after a few days in San Pedro and eat something light before going up.
