About Parque El Loa
Parque El Loa is in the south of Calama, beside the Río Loa, the longest river in Chile, which crosses the desert to the Pacific. In a place where it almost never rains, the trees, lawns and river water make the park the city's main green space.
Inside the park there is a replica of the Iglesia de San Francisco de Chiu Chiu, with the white façade and the two towers of the original, and buildings that reproduce the traditional architecture of the Atacama region.
The park's museum brings together archaeological and ethnographic pieces from the peoples of the Loa: ceramics, textiles, musical instruments and everyday objects. Along the river, the Paseo Borde Río has trails, sports courts and picnic areas.
On weekends, Calama families fill the park, which functions as the city's plaza and leisure area.
