About Iglesia de San Francisco de Chiu Chiu
The Iglesia de San Francisco is in the village of Chiu Chiu, an oasis on the banks of the Rio Loa, about 35 km east of Calama. Built in the 17th century, it is regarded as the oldest church in Chile and was declared a National Monument in 1951.
The adobe walls are 1.2 metres thick and painted white. The roof is made of chañar, algarrobo and cactus wood, tied with leather strips, without any nails, and covered with mud and straw.
The two stone towers on the façade were rebuilt in 1965, after the old wooden bell towers fell in the 19th century. Inside there is a crucifix carried in processions and a painting of the scourged Christ. A wall with graves surrounds the grounds, next to the village plaza.
Chiu Chiu is also a starting point for the Pukará de Lasana, an Atacameño fortress a few kilometres to the north, in the Loa valley.
