About Münster Unserer Lieben Frau
The Münster Unserer Lieben Frau is on the Marktplatz, the market square, on the eastern side of the island. Its origins go back to the women's monastery founded around 810. After the great fire of 1728, the church was rebuilt between 1748 and 1752 by Johann Caspar Bagnato, the same architect responsible for the palace on the island of Mainau.
The interior burned in 1922 and the nave roof collapsed in 1987; both were restored. Today you can see Baroque ceiling paintings and decoration in red and gold.
On the other side of the square is St. Stephan, the largest church in Lindau, of Lutheran worship. Its origin is a Romanesque basilica from 1180; the curved façade with an iron balcony dates from the early 16th century, and the tower, about 58 meters high, was given its bulbous dome starting in 1781. Inside, the decoration is sober and the pulpit stands in the middle of the nave.
On the same square is the Haus zum Cavazzen, housing the city museum, which makes the Marktplatz a good spot for a break between visits.
