About Mangturm
The Mangturm is the tower on the edge of the quay, between the station and the port. It was built in the 12th century as part of the medieval wall and served as a watchtower and signal tower for boats: baskets of fire were hung on a pole on the outside.
When the new lighthouse was completed in 1856, the tower lost its function. A storey was then added and a roof of glazed, colorful tiles was put on, which today stands out from afar. The tower is about 35 metres high and, in the past, was surrounded by water.
An inscription on the wall recalls the tower’s role in defending the port of the old Free Imperial City. At the top there is a room with windows facing the town and the lake, reached by 89 steps.
The interior opens only at specific times, such as the harbour Christmas market, and for pre-booked events. For most of the year visits are from the outside, on the route between the station and the breakwaters.
