About Hamburger Rathaus

Hamburg's Rathaus (city hall) was built between 1886 and 1897 under the direction of architect Martin Haller, in a neorenaissance style. It houses the Bürgerschaft, the city-state’s parliament, and the Senate, the government. The 112-metre tower, with its façade covered in statues of emperors, dominates Rathausmarkt square.

Right at the entrance is the Diele, a large columned hall open to the public. The reliefs on the columns depict citizens of Hamburg, in contrast with the emperors on the façade: the ground-floor hall represents the idea that citizens do not need to climb to reach their rulers. At the rear, the inner courtyard contains the Hygieia fountain (Hygieia-Brunnen), made in memory of the 1892 cholera epidemic.

The representative halls of the parliament and the Senate can be seen on regular guided tours, also offered in other languages when the political calendar allows. The building has hundreds of rooms, decorated with wood, paintings and ornate ceilings.

The Rathausmarkt in front is the city’s events stage and usually hosts the Christmas market from late November until close to Christmas. From here the Binnenalster and the Jungfernstieg are just a few steps away.
