About Hamburger Kunsthalle
The Hamburger Kunsthalle is next to the central station and houses one of Germany's most important public art collections, with more than 13,000 m² of exhibition space. The holdings range from the Middle Ages to contemporary art, in three connected buildings: the original 19th-century brick building, an early 20th-century extension and the Galerie der Gegenwart, a white-cube dedicated to recent art.
The highlight is 19th-century German painting, with works by Caspar David Friedrich, such as the Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, and by Philipp Otto Runge. There is also a section of old masters, with the medieval altarpiece by the Master Bertram, and a modern art section with Max Beckmann, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch and the German Expressionists.
The prints and drawings cabinet holds more than 130,000 drawings and prints, shown in temporary exhibitions. Much of the collection is also digitized.
Some rooms may be temporarily closed and famous works may be removed from display for a few days; check the visitor information on the official website before you go.
