Nova Era – MG Destination Historic Towns of Minas Gerais (Estrada Real)
How to get there
Regional access is organized via BR-381 and the connections with Itabira. Leaving Itabira, the road corridor uses the MG-129 and the MGC-120. To continue to Santa Bárbara, return to the BR-381 axis and the access via Barão de Cocais; the map does not show a direct road between the two cities.
When to go
To walk around the Praça da Matriz and the slopes, choose days without rain. Check with the parish about visiting conditions for the Matriz São José da Lagoa, including any restrictions due to conservation work.

Frequently asked questions
What is Nova Era's role in this itinerary?
It is the stop in the Itabira sector linked to the former arraial of São José da Lagoa. The opening of the page introduces the city and its relationship to the circuit; the sequence then continues to Santa Bárbara.
What to observe at the stop in Nova Era?
The Matriz São José da Lagoa, of 18th-century origin, sits at the top of a hill. The architectural and landscape ensemble of the Praça da Matriz and the surrounding manor houses help to identify the historic core.
Is there a direct road from Nova Era to Santa Bárbara indicated on the map?
The line is schematic. The connection described in this route returns to the BR-381 axis and uses the access via Barão de Cocais before reaching Santa Bárbara. Plan this return in your navigation.
Can the matriz be visited inside?
Entry depends on parish operations and conservation conditions. Confirm before traveling; a walk around the surroundings does not guarantee access to the interior.
