A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Palmas is a planned capital, where wide avenues link plazas, parks and beaches of the lake formed by the Rio Tocantins. Praça dos Girassóis concentrates the Palácio Araguaia and monuments related to the state's history. The Palacinho, the first seat of the state government, adds historical memory to the urban walk.

Parque Cesamar offers a pause between transfers. At Praia da Graciosa, the lake, the pier and the sunset view change the pace of the visit. Praia do Prata is another option to experience the city's relationship with water.

Taquaruçu is a district of Palmas, with trails and waterfalls such as Roncadeira and Escorrega Macaco. It's worth dedicating a day to this hilly part of the municipality, without mixing it with the tour of the central squares.

At the table, regional flavors appear in dishes with fish and in preparations like frango caipira. Taquaruçu also brings together recipes using Cerrado ingredients, including babaçu and murici.

This destination brings together 1 city: Palmas.

July Low rain

Beach season · Low lake

This is the month of the beach season, when river levels drop and the lake beaches gain activities, camping and more activity. It hardly rains and the air is dry. Highs are above 30 °C and nights are milder. Boat trips and the crossing to Ilha Canela make more sense at this time. School holidays increase demand for tours, so book in advance.

August Low rain

Dry season · Heat and dry air

It's one of the driest months of the year and average highs exceed 35 °C. Air humidity is low, so bring water, sunscreen and light clothing. Lake beaches remain frequented at the start of the month. Favor Praça dos Girassóis early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In Taquaruçu, trails are firm but waterfalls may have reduced flow.

September Low rain

Year's peak heat · Dry season

Temperatures are the highest of the year, with average highs around 37 °C, and rainfall remains low, averaging about 30 mm. The dry air and heat call for outings in the morning and late afternoon, with plenty of water. Taquaruçu waterfalls are good for cooling off but may have reduced flow. Isolated showers may occur at the end of the month.

October Some rain

Return of the rains · Humid heat

The first rains return, averaging around 130 mm, generally in showers at the end of the day. Highs are around 33 °C or higher. The heat remains strong during sunny hours. Lake and city outings work better in the morning. In Taquaruçu check the weather and trail conditions, because rain can make the ground wet.

November High rain

Frequent rain · Green Cerrado

The rainy season sets in, with frequent showers, usually in the afternoon and evening. Heat and humidity are high. Cerrado vegetation becomes greener and waterfalls gradually gain volume. Leave boat trips and trails for the mornings and have a Plan B for downtown and the parks. The dirt roads in the serra require care.

December High rain

Heavy rain · Waterfalls filling up

Rain is heavy and frequent, with long showers on some days. Highs are around 30 °C, with high humidity. Taquaruçu waterfalls have more water and trails become slippery, so footwear matters. Lake outings depend on the weather. Allow extra time in your itinerary and confirm attractions before leaving.

How to get around Palmas and whether you need to rent a car

The attractions are in distinct sectors: the center, lake beaches and Taquaruçu. This affects transport choices.

From the airport, Viacap operates the Aeroporto/Estação Aureny III line, with boarding at the terminal marquee. The airport taxi service is run by Cooperpalmas. A taxi ride to the center takes about 15 minutes. Ride-hailing apps also serve the airport.

For Taquaruçu, there is a bus to the district via Linha 1 to Taquaralto and then via Linha 45. The district is about 30 km from the center and there is no public transport to the waterfalls. Therefore, for Roncadeira and Escorrega Macaco, a rental car or a tour with a local agency makes the day easier. For the center and beaches, taxis and apps are usually sufficient.

Package with transfer or on your own

There are two ways to organize arrival in Palmas.

On your own: you buy the flight or bus ticket and choose how to get out of the airport or bus station. Options are taxi, ride-hailing app, urban bus or rental car. This is the most flexible option. It requires you to coordinate transfers between the center, the beaches and Taquaruçu.

Package with transfer: local agencies and operators can include airport pickup and tours, such as a day in Taquaruçu. What's included varies by operator. Confirm whether the transfer covers both ways, if it covers dawn arrivals and whether tickets and a guide are included. The cost is paid separately and depends on the itinerary.

Those heading to Jalapão may need to spend at least one night in Palmas because of flight schedules. In that case, book the transfer before arriving.

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

July combines the beach season with outings on the lake and around the city. To walk in Praça dos Girassóis, prefer the cooler parts of the day. In Taquaruçu, check trail and waterfall conditions before setting out.

How many days to stay

Allow three days: one for Praça dos Girassóis, Palacinho and Parque Cesamar; another for the beaches of Praia da Graciosa and Praia do Prata; and the third for trails and waterfalls of Taquaruçu. With four days, allocate more time to the district and its regional meals.

Which city to stay in

The Plano Diretor, in the central area near Praça dos Girassóis, is a base for concentrating the urban part of the visit. Staying in Taquaruçu makes sense when the waterfalls and the hill-region gastronomy are the priority. In that case, group the downtown visits into the same day.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Frequently asked questions about Palmas

Is Taquaruçu part of Palmas?

Yes. Taquaruçu is a district of the municipality. Roncadeira and Escorrega Macaco are part of the capital's itinerary, but they require travel to the hilly area and a walk to the falls.

What to see at Praça dos Girassóis?

See the Palácio Araguaia and the monuments that present Tocantins' history. Combine this visit with the Palacinho, in another part of the city, to learn about the former government seat.

Which beach to choose to see the sunset?

Praia da Graciosa has a pier and a view over the lake. It is a choice for staying on the shore and watching the light change over the water.

Can you see Palmas over a weekend?

In two days, concentrate the visit on Praça dos Girassóis, Parque Cesamar and Graciosa. Add a third day for Taquaruçu, without fitting the waterfalls into urban transfers.

What to try in Taquaruçu?

Look for regional dishes such as frango caipira and recipes that use babaçu or murici. The gastronomy is a reason to stay in the district after the nature outing.

Are the Taquaruçu waterfalls paid? How does the visitation fee work?

Taquaruçu has more than 80 waterfalls, most on private property, and therefore a visitation fee is charged. The amount varies by property and changes frequently, and some places accept cash only. Roncadeira and Escorrega Macaco are located on private property within an Environmental Protection Area, with controlled visitation and charged entry. Do I need a guide to visit the Taquaruçu waterfalls?

At most of the more developed waterfalls a guide is not mandatory. At Roncadeira and Escorrega Macaco, for example, the trail is marked, with stairways in sections.
