BR-285 serves the town seat and provides access to the Serra da Rocinha. For the Cachoeira da Cortina and other outings, use the local roads with the defined meeting point; check the condition of the highway before crossing the mountain.

Allow at least two days for trips on the Rio Fortuna and at the Portal do Palmiro. Access to the Cachoeira da Cortina should only be included in the itinerary after an explicit confirmation of reopening.
When to go
In Rocinha, rain and fog influence travel. Assess river routes with the driver/guide and confirm with the municipal tourism office whether the Cortina has been cleared, as it has a recorded closure.

Set aside another outing for the Toca do Tatu, via the Portal do Palmiro access, with accompaniment. Observe the galleries and the markings preserved in the sandstone, respecting the authorized route.

Is the Cachoeira da Cortina available for visits?
There is a closure notice issued in July 2025, and reopening was not confirmed in this inquiry. Check with municipal tourism and only schedule entry after an explicit authorization.
Is the Toca do Tatu a common cave?
It is a paleotoca: a tunnel excavated by megafauna animals in rock. The site also contains traces of human occupation and should be visited with accompaniment.
What is the landscape of the Cascata do Padre?
The waterfall is on the Rio Fortuna, between sandstone cliffs of the Formação Botucatu and vegetation that lines the walls.
Can I combine all the rivers in the same trip?
Cortina, Rio Fortuna and Rio do Salto are programs with distinct access points. Choose the activity according to water conditions and the time available for each trail.
Is the Serra da Rocinha included in the hikes?
The road crossing of the Serra da Rocinha via BR-285 is a transfer separate from the walks to the waterfalls and the paleotoca.
