About Igreja Matriz de São Bento

The Igreja Matriz de São Bento is the landmark of the historic center of São Bento do Sapucaí, in the São Paulo part of the Serra da Mantiqueira. It sits in the upper part of town, facing Praça Cônego Bento de Almeida, and can be seen from many points downtown.

The church was built around 1853 in rammed earth, with the labor of enslaved people from the region. The central tower only came in 1906, at the initiative of Father Francisco Reale. In 1916 the side towers were built and the altars and decoration installed.

For its historical value, the church was listed by Condephaat, São Paulo state's heritage agency, in 2015. It is one of the oldest buildings in town and the natural starting point for a walk through downtown.

The visit is quick: you can admire the facade from the square, go in to see the interior outside Mass times and continue through the nearby streets. Access is via the downtown streets, with no trail and no effort beyond a short climb.
