About Pedra Redonda
Pedra Redonda is one of the best-known trails in Monte Verde, a district of Camanducaia, in southern Minas Gerais. It is a short outing, about one kilometer, that ends on a broad, flat summit with a 360-degree view of the Serra da Mantiqueira.
The path is self-guided and has stairs, handrails and retaining walls that make the climb easier. Halfway up there is a wooden deck that works as a viewpoint, good for a break. The last stretch is steeper.
Up top, at about 1,990 meters above sea level, is the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo. On a clear day the view reaches the mountains of Minas, the valleys on the São Paulo side and the Campos do Jordão area.
The trail is rated easy to moderate and is done by families, but the stairs and obstacles can be hard for people with limited mobility. There is an entrance fee, the number of visitors is limited and tickets must be bought online in advance.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
About an hour and a half is enough to climb, enjoy the view at the top and come down without rushing.
Best time
The dry months of fall and winter usually have clearer skies and longer views; go in the morning, when visibility tends to be better, and avoid stretches of rainy days, which make the access road worse.
How to get there
The entrance is outside the little town center of Monte Verde and is reached by a potholed dirt road. High-clearance or 4x4 vehicles get through more easily; with a regular car, after rain, you may have to leave the vehicle before the entrance and continue on foot.
Tip
Buy your ticket online before you go, because tickets are not sold on site, and bring a jacket: it is windy at the top and the temperature drops a lot.
