About Pinheirão

The Pinheirão (Giant Pine) is a huge araucaria pine that lives on a farm near the district of Pericó, in the countryside of São Joaquim. It is considered the largest known araucaria in Brazil: it is 39.2 meters tall, with a trunk 3.25 meters in diameter at chest height and more than 10 meters around.

Its age is estimated at between 600 and 900 years. The tree has been in the same family for generations, and the owners say it escaped being cut down because there was no saw big enough for the trunk. Since 2012 the property has welcomed visitors as a form of environmental education.

The way to the tree is a short trail through the forest, among century-old tree ferns. At the base of the trunk there is a large natural split, impressive for its size. It is a living tree that still produces pine cones every year.

The trail is well marked but has ups and downs and dirt stretches that get slippery in rain. It suits almost all ages but is not wheelchair accessible.
