About Teatro Amazonas
Teatro Amazonas is the opera house of Manaus and the city's best-known building. It stands on Largo de São Sebastião, in the historic center, and has been a landmark listed by Iphan (the national heritage institute) since 1966.
Construction began in 1884 and the theater opened on December 31, 1896, at the height of the rubber boom, when Manaus grew rich from latex exports. Much of the material came from Europe. The dome, visible from many points downtown, is covered with about 36,000 glazed ceramic tiles brought from Alsace, in France.
The visit is guided and takes you through the audience hall, the boxes and the Salão Nobre (main hall), decorated by Italian painter Domenico de Angelis, with a painted ceiling and an inlaid wooden floor. In the auditorium, the stage curtain depicts the Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Waters).
The theater is still active, with concerts by the Amazonas Filarmônica, ballet and the Festival Amazonas de Ópera, held every year. Attending a performance is the best way to see the hall in use. The building has accessibility features for people with physical, visual and hearing disabilities.
