About Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa
The Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa is the oldest public market in Manaus. It is downtown, on Rua dos Barés, on the banks of the Rio Negro, and locals simply call it the Mercadão.
It opened in 1883, during the rubber era, and is named after Adolpho Lisboa, who ran the city at the time. The design followed the model of the old Les Halles market in Paris, with an iron structure brought from Europe. The complex later grew, with side pavilions and an iron pavilion at the back. It has been listed by Iphan (the national heritage institute) since 1987.
The building has two fronts: one facing the street and the other facing the river. Inside, stalls sell regional fish, fruit, vegetables, manioc flours, spices, herbs and medicinal plants, as well as Indigenous and regional crafts. There are also spots for local food.
It is an easy, flat and short visit, good if you want to get to know Amazon products and the bustle of the port. The surroundings are downtown's popular shopping area, always full of people and boats.
