About Centro Cultural Palácio Rio Negro
The Centro Cultural Palácio Rio Negro is an eclectic-style mansion on Avenida Sete de Setembro, in downtown Manaus. It was built in the early 20th century, at the height of the rubber boom, as the home of German merchant Karl Waldemar Scholz, which is why it became known as Palacete Scholz.
When the rubber trade collapsed, the house passed to the Amazonas state government, was renamed Palácio Rio Negro and served for decades as the seat of the state government. In 1980 it was listed as a historic and artistic landmark of the state. After restoration, it became a cultural center, and it still hosts official ceremonies of the governor.
The visit takes you through the halls of the former residence, with its staircase, chandeliers and period furniture, plus exhibitions that change throughout the year. The palace also hosts recitals, book launches and other cultural events.
It is a short, relaxed visit, good if you want to understand rubber-era Manaus beyond Teatro Amazonas. It is next to Parque Jefferson Péres, along the igarapé (creek), and you can visit both on the same walk.
