About Bosque da Ciência (Inpa)

Bosque da Ciência is an area of about 13 hectares of forest in the middle of urban Manaus, maintained by the National Institute for Amazon Research (Inpa). It opened to the public in 1995 as a space for science outreach, environmental education and leisure, in the Petrópolis neighborhood.

The visit follows shaded trails through the woods. Along the way you often come across free-roaming animals, such as monkeys and sloths, and with luck the pied tamarin, a small endangered monkey that is a symbol of Manaus. The most popular attraction is the Robin Best Aquatic Park, with tanks for Amazonian manatees and giant otters. The manatees usually arrive at Inpa orphaned or injured and are cared for before returning to the wild.

There is also the caiman enclosure, the Lago Amazônico, with turtles, fish and aquatic plants, the Ilha da Tanimbuca, named after a giant tree, and a colony of native stingless bees. The suspended trail, a walkway of about 110 meters near the treetops, links the Ilha da Tanimbuca to the Paiol da Cultura. At the Casa da Ciência, the Tramas da Ciência exhibit uses games and interactive pieces to show what Inpa researches about the Amazon.

It is an easy outing, good for families with children and for anyone who wants to see wildlife and Amazon forest without leaving the city. The suspended trail has steps and uneven sections and is not wheelchair accessible. The agroforestry trail is a dirt path and calls for closed-toe shoes.
