Things to do in Jijoca de Jericoacoara
- Duna do Pôr do Sol The big dune next to the village is the late-afternoon meeting point, with an open view of the sea. The climb is quick and the way down usually involves some sliding in the sand.
- Pedra Furada A rock arch carved by the sea, the symbol of Jeri, reached by a walk along the beach at low tide. Between mid-July and August the sun sets right inside the opening.
- Lagoa do Paraíso A huge lagoon of shallow fresh water, with hammocks and swings in the water and stalls on the shore. It makes for a full-day outing.
- Lagoa Azul Next to Lagoa do Paraíso, it is smaller and usually calmer, good if you want to escape the crowds. Both fit into the same buggy tour.
- Serrote e o farol The highest point in the park, with a lighthouse on top and views of the village, the dunes and the coast. The climb is short, but tough in the sun.
- Árvore da Preguiça A mangrove tree bent over by the wind, with its trunk leaning almost flat against the sand. It is outside the village, on the way to Preá.
When to go
From July to January it is sunny and very windy, good for kitesurfing. The rains are concentrated in the first half of the year, mostly in March and April, and the lagoons fill up afterward. Between mid-July and August the sun sets inside the opening of Pedra Furada. The town's anniversary is March 6.
How many days to stay
Four days: one for the east tour, with the lagoons and Pedra Furada, one for the west tour, to Tatajuba, and the rest for the village and the sunset on the dune. Two days cover the essentials.
