Rodoviária de Jijoca de Jericoacoara
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Jijoca is almost 300 km from Fortaleza, four to five hours by car via the CE-085. Guanabara buses run from Fortaleza to Jijoca; from there, the jardineira (open-sided truck) takes you to the village of Jericoacoara over about 20 km of sand. Jericoacoara Airport is in Cruz, about 13 km from town. Private cars are not allowed in the village.
How many days
Four days: one for the east tour, with the lagoons and Pedra Furada, one for the west tour, to Tatajuba, and the rest for the village and the sunset on the dune. Two days cover the essentials.
When to go
From July to January it is sunny and very windy, good for kitesurfing. The rains are concentrated in the first half of the year, mostly in March and April, and the lagoons fill up afterward. Between mid-July and August the sun sets inside the opening of Pedra Furada. The town's anniversary is March 6.
Do you need a car?
To get to Jijoca, a car helps. Inside the village, no: private cars are not allowed, and you do everything on foot. For the lagoons and tours, the way to go is buggy, 4x4 or jardineira.

Frequently asked questions
Can cars enter the village?
Not into the village. Private cars stay in an authorized parking lot, at the village entrance or in Jijoca; from Jijoca, the last stretch, about 20 km on sand, is done by jardineira (open-sided truck), 4x4 or buggy. If you arrive by bus or transfer, the change happens along the way.
Is there a fee to enter Jericoacoara?
Yes. The city government charges a Sustainable Tourism Fee to every visitor to the village. Pay on the city government's website before your trip or at the posts at the entrance. It is valid for a set number of days and, after that, is charged per extra day.
Can I stay in Jijoca and visit Jeri?
Yes. The town is close to the lagoons and has simpler lodging. To the village, take a jardineira or a transfer from the local cooperatives.
Are there ride-hailing apps?
Don't count on them in the region. Use jardineiras, buggy drivers and transfers from the local cooperatives.
